Growing food is among the most fundamental of human activities, and for many South Africans it is also a route to employment, self-sufficiency, and community resilience. The Plant Production qualification at NQF Level 1 is the very first step on the formal agricultural education pathway, designed for learners with minimal prior schooling who want to enter the sector with recognised credentials and practical competence.
At this foundational level, the focus is on building the most basic plant production skills: understanding the growth cycle of common crops, preparing soil for planting, applying water and basic nutrients, and identifying obvious signs of plant stress or disease. Learners work under close supervision and are not yet expected to make independent decisions, but they are equipped to contribute meaningfully to a productive farming team from day one.
