Livestock farming is the backbone of South Africa's rural agricultural economy, providing livelihoods for millions of people across the country's diverse farming regions. Whether you are working with cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, or a combination of species, building a successful livestock farming career requires more than practical animal handling skills — it requires an understanding of animal health, nutrition, reproduction, market systems, and basic farm business management. The Livestock Farmer qualification at NQF Level 3 develops exactly this holistic foundation.
At this level, learners develop competence in the core dimensions of livestock farming: managing animal health and welfare, implementing grazing or housing management systems, monitoring reproductive performance and planning breeding programmes, maintaining production records, managing basic farm finances, and engaging effectively with input suppliers, veterinary services, and livestock markets. You will also develop an understanding of the environmental stewardship responsibilities that come with livestock farming.
