The Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner qualification at NQF Level 5 represents a significant advancement in an OHS career — the transition from operational officer to specialist practitioner with the competence to design, manage, and continuously improve the safety management systems of complex organisations. At this level, you are expected to move beyond routine compliance monitoring and take strategic responsibility for safety culture, risk governance, and the performance of integrated OHS management systems.
The curriculum covers advanced OHS practitioner competencies: designing and implementing OHS management systems aligned with OHSAS 18001 or ISO 45001, conducting detailed occupational health risk assessments and hygiene surveys, managing occupational disease prevention programmes, leading incident investigation teams, developing and delivering OHS training programmes, managing contractor safety, and engaging effectively with the Department of Employment and Labour and other regulatory bodies.
